Most medical fitness professionals are familiar with the term proprioception, but do you know how to actively improve it? Although proprioception is a "global" sense, there can be areas in the brain's map of the body that are unclear or "foggy", resulting in less than optimal proprioceptive input. This can result in less coordination, reduced strength output, and limited range of motion.
This session will provide practitioners with a better understanding of proprioception and how to improve it through specific sensory input techniques and exercises.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the concept of proprioception and how it can be actively improved.
- Understand how sensory input improves proprioception and learn means to apply it for typical client presentations
- Learn how and why joint motor control improves proprioception and learn means to apply it for typical client presentations

Pat Marques is a Z-Health Master Trainer and NSCA-CPT specializing in training the nervous system to improve performance and get out of pain. After retiring from the Active Duty Army, Pat pursued his education and certifications in exercise science, initially working with wounded, ill, and injured soldiers. During this time that Pat discovered the power of using a neurological approach to training to get out of pain and improve fitness and performance.
Grove Higgins, DC
Dr. Grove Higgins, DC is a chiropractor, biomechanist, and human performance expert with over 30 years in healthcare. He began his career in rehab at 15 and later trained under soft tissue pioneer Dr. Michael Leahy. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of New York Chiropractic College, Dr. Higgins has conducted research in gait mechanics and foot development. He has taught functional anatomy to healthcare professionals since 2003 and consults globally on neurological training and injury prevention.
